WINONA, Minn. — University of Minnesota-Morris held the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team off the board for nearly 86 of the game's 90 minutes during the team's nonconference game Sunday afternoon.
In those other four minutes, however, the Cardinal offense was unstoppable.
Saint Mary's erupted for three goals in a span of three minutes and 30 seconds early in the first half, as the Cardinals picked up their second straight win, rolling to a 3-0 victory over the Cougars at Ochrymowycz Field.
The Cardinals did not even let the fans get comfortable in their seats before kicking their offense into high gear.
Charles Reit (Arcadia, Wis.) opened the scoring in the fourth minute, taking a feed from
Josh Balsiger (Camas, Wash.) and rifling a shot past UM-Morris goalkeeper Cody Christ.
Less than two minutes later, it was
Sean Butcher's (Cave Creek, Ariz.) turn, as the senior netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season—an unassisted tally that pushed the Saint Mary's lead to 2-0.
And the Cardinals weren't finished.
Just 2:03 later, the lead grew to 3-0, as
Jared Wolt (Farmington, Minn.) notched his first of the season, off an assist from Butcher to put the Cardinals in complete control.
UM-Morris was not able to generate much offense against the Cardinals' stifling defense, but when the Cougars did,
Jimmy Perreault (Batavia, Ill.) was up to the task, as the sophomore goalkeeper—on in relief of starter
Alberto Centeno (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) late in the second half—stopped a pair of Cougar shots, including a diving save in the 86
th minute to preserve the shutout.
While Centeno and Perreault combined on the two-save shutout, UM-Morris goalkeepers Christ and Matt Marshall each finished with four saves.
The Cardinals (6-5-0 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday, traveling to Collegeville, Minn., for a 4 p.m. showdown with Saint John's.
