WINONA, Minn. — For the fifth time this season, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team found itself having to work a little overtime in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Macalester.
Â
Unfortunately, overtimes have not been very kind to the Cardinals this season.
Â
And Saturday proved to be no exception.
Â
For the third time in their five OT games, it was the Cardinals who suffered the agony of defeat, as Macalester scored the game-winning goal with 1:38 remaining in the second extra period to lift the Scots to a 2-1 victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Cardinals grabbed the 1-0 lead nine minutes into the second half—thanks to an acrobatic, bicycle-kick goal off the foot of
Mary Loy (Burien, Wash.) that beat Macalester goalkeeper Rachel Wilson-King and settled into the back of the net.
Â
The lead would only last 18 minutes, however, as Clara Webby headed a Jaime Hasama direct kick past Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Zoe Boleneus (Spokane, Wash.) to knot the game at one.
Â
Neither team would be able to net the game-winner over the final 18 minutes—thanks in part to the play of Boleneus, who robbed Macalester's Elizabeth Han with a diving save with just over 10 minutes remaining in the second half.
Â
Wilson-King made the only save of the first 10-minute overtime, and it appeared like the Cardinals would be headed for their second MIAC tie in their last three conference contests.
Â
Hasama had other ideas, however, picking up a loose ball and drilling a shot past Boleneus to give the Scots the come-from-behind victory.
Â
Boleneus finished with six saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Wilson-King—on in relief of starter Emma Toomer, who made three saves in the first half—finished with three saves.
Â
The Cardinals (0-8-1 MIAC, 5-10-1 overall) hit the road for the last time this season on Tuesday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. MIAC matchup against Carleton.
