WINONA, Minn. — It was a classic case of the Tortoise and the Hare Saturday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
Unfortunately for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team—the Hare in Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fable—no matter how hard they tried, they could not write a more favorable ending.
Â
Saint Mary's scored less than 20 minutes into the opening half, but slow-and-steady Concordia—aka the Tortoise—scored twice in an eight-minute span late in the second half, lifting the Cobbers to a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals in the teams' season finale.
Â
Kyle Lichttenegger (De Pere, Wis.) got the Cardinals off to a fast start, scoring his fourth goal of the season in the 19
th minute to give Saint Mary's the early 1-0 advantage.
Â
An advantage the Cardinals would carry through the first of the first half—and most of the second.
Â
Concordia displayed an unstoppable finishing kick, however, as Aronah Muktarp pulled the Cobbers even with his sixth of the season with less than 17 minutes remaining in regulation.
Â
Eight minutes later, the Cobbers struck again, as Sam Gess took a feed from Austin Peterson and beat Cardinal goalkeeper
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) with what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Â
Levy—one of six seniors playing his final collegiate game, finished with four saves, while CC goalkeeper Jackson Carr stopped two of the Cardinals' three shots on goal.
Â
Saint Mary's closes out its season 2-7-1 in conference play and 4-11-2 overall, while Concordia finishes 2-6-2 in the MIAC and 9-8-1 overall.
