WINONA, Minn. — Feeling in the Halloween spirit, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams gave their home fans plenty of treats during their season-opening triangular against Gustavus and Iowa Lakes Community College Saturday afternoon at the Jul Gernes Pool.

Delivering the biggest treats for the Cardinals was
Jack McCormick, who collected a pair of first-place finishes in his first collegiate meet—winning the 500 freestyle (5:18.96) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:48.62) to lead the Cardinal men to a win dual-meet win over Iowa Lakes Community College and a loss to Gustavus.

On the women's side, Abby Hauser led the Cardinal charge, finishing first in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.86) and second in both the 200 IM (2:23.29) and 100 backstroke (1:09.16), as Saint Mary's won its dual with ILCC and fell to Gustavus.

Along with his two first-place finishes, McCormick also chipped in a fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.97), while
Brian Mockler placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.63) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.92), and
Jack Wells delivered a first in the 100 freestyle (49.71) and a second in the 200 freestyle (1:56.26).
Griffin Rades also had a big opening day, recording second-place times in both the 200 IM (2:06.58) and 100 backstroke (59.21).

On the women's side, Kierra Walske dove to a first in the three-meter diving competition (154.55) and added a second in the one-meter (170.45). Claire King stopped the clock in 27.54 to place second in the 50 freestyle (27.54) and posted a time of 1:01.56 in placing fourth in the 100 freestyle. Brooke Shefchik (fourth, 1,000 freestyle, 12:21.65; fourth, 500 freestyle, 5:56.85), Alexis Holliday (third, 1,000 freestyle, 12:04.08), Amanda Hanson (fourth, 200 freestyle, 2:16.26), Isis Hurtado (third, 50 freestyle, 28.02), and Emme Quandt (fourth, 100 butterfly, 1:10.94) also posted top-four performances for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the Hamline Invitational. Action begins at 1 p.m.
