WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team wanted nothing more than to gift-wrap a season-ending victory for their six graduating seniors.
Â
And they almost succeeded.
Â
Instead,
Carina Friend (Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Marissa Carlyle (San Jose, Calif.),
Sarah Egbert (Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Emily Loof (Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Molly Homeyer (Arlington, Texas), and
Abby Lafko (Gilbert, Ariz.)—playing their final games as Cardinals—had to settle for a double-overtime tie.
Â
The Cardinals and Cobbers battled for 110 minutes Saturday afternoon, but frigid temperatures and chilly winds sent both offenses into hibernation, as the two teams battled to a 0-0 stalemate at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
Defense was the name of the game from start to finish, as the Cardinals limited the visiting Cobbers to just one shot on goal, while Saint Mary's managed to put three of their eight total shots on target.
Â
And those shots that did find their way to the net were turned away by the goalkeeping tandem of
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) and Maddy Reed.
Â
Pederson finished with one save en route to her first shutout of the season and third of her collegiate career, while Reed stopped all three Cardinal shots.
