WINONA, Minn. —
Charles Reit (Arcadia, Wis.) has been a scoring machine for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team of later.
The Cardinal sophomore entered Sunday's nonconference game against UW-Superior at Ochrymowycz Field having scored a goal in three straight games.
For the first 89 minutes against the Yellowjackets, however, it appeared like that streak would come to a screeching halt.
Fortunately for coach
Corbin Bowers, Reit had other ideas.
Reit scored the game-winning goal with 49 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the visiting Yellowjackets in their final nonconference game of the season.
The first half was not kind to Saint Mary's in last Friday's 4-1 loss to Saint John's—a game in which the Johnnies scored three times in the game's opening 11 minutes—but against the Yellowjackets, the first 45 minutes were much more to Bowers' liking.
Sean Butcher (Cave Creek, Ariz.) got the Cardinals on the board in the 11
th minute off an assist from
Garrett Grunke (Verona, Wis.). Eleven minutes later, it was 2-0 Cardinals on a goal by
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.)—and it appeared like it would be smooth sailing to win No. 7 on the season.
Once again, things aren't always as they appear.
UW-Superior scored back-to-back goals—the first six minutes into the second half and the second with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation—to pull the Yellowjackets even, 2-2.
And set up Reit's last-minute heroics.
Alberto Centeno (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) came up big in goal for the Cardinals on more than one occasion over the final 45 minutes, making five second-half saves—including three from point-blank range.
The Cardinals, who improved to 7-6 overall with the win, return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, hosting Gustavus in a 7 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
