ST. PAUL, Minn. — The distance freestylers stole the show for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams Saturday afternoon at the Macalester Roger Ahlman Invitational.
Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.) and
Jack McCormick (Milwaukee, Wis.) each recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the two longest freestyle events of the afternoon, leading the Cardinals to a pair of fourth-place team finishes.
Shefchik touched the wall in 5:40.83 in the 500 freestyle and added a time of 11:50.43 in the 1,000 freestyle en route to her two second-place times, while McCormick swam a 4:57.27 in placing second the 500 freestyle and added a time of 10:27.72 for his second second of the afternoon in the 1000 freestyle.
And the Cardinal duo weren't the only distance swimmers making waves Saturday afternoon.
Alexis Holliday placed fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:49.26) and seventh in the 1,000 (12:36.84), while Amanda Hansen (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) added a sixth in the 1,000 freestyle (12:31.23) and Alyssa Haram (Maple Grove, Minn.) posted a seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:53.95).
The Saint Mary's women's 200 freestyle relay of Holliday, Haram, Isis Hurtado (Chicago, Ill.), and Claire King (Red Wing, Minn.) placed third, while Kierra Walske (Rochester, Minn.) was fourth in the three-meter diving (174.80) and Kayla Boettcher (Colfax, Wis.) was fifth in the one-meter competition (171.85). Haram and Emme Quandt (Shawano, Wis.) chipped in seventh-place efforts in the 200 freestyle (2:13.03) and 200 butterfly (2:35.71) for the Cardinal women, while Erica Camarato (DeForest, Wis. / 8
th, 100 breaststroke, 1:20.57; 9
th, 200 IM, 2:39.33), and Shefchik (9
th, 200 freestyle (2:15.43) also posted top-10 finishes.
On the men's side, McCormick added a fourth in the 200 freestyle to his two second-place finishes, while
Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) was seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.11) and Nick Sawchuk (Rochester, Minn.) finished 12
th in the 100 freestyle (57.01) and 13
th in the 50 freestyle (26.68).
The Cardinals are now off until Dec. 2-3, when they head to Rochester, Minn., for the Rochester Invitational, hosted by St. Cloud State.
