WINONA, Minn. —
Kareem Anthony-Bello (Chicago, Ill.) scored in double figures for the third time in his first six collegiate games Wednesday evening, but the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's basketball team could not overcome a cold shooting night in falling to Carleton 78-38 at the Saint Mary's Gym.
Anthony-Bello knocked down 3 of his 8 field goals attempts—including a pair of 3-pointers—and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line en route to his team-best 10 points.
The Cardinals got off to a slow start, surrendering the game's first 10 points, before
Brady Stevens knocked down a jumper with 14:33 remaining in the opening half.
The Cardinals suffered through another drought followed Stevens' field goal, as Carleton rattled off 12 unanswered points to lead by 20, 22-2. Bello cut the Cardinal deficit to 11, 22-11, with nine consecutive points—including both of his 3-pointers—with 8:43 left in the half.
From there, however, it was all Carleton, as the Knights outscored Saint Mary's 21-9 over the final eight minutes to take a commanding 43-20 advantage into the locker room at the half.
The intermission did nothing to warm the Cardinals' shooting touch, as Saint Mary's managed just 18 second-half points in dropping its second straight conference contest.
Saint Mary's finished 13-for-47 from the field (28 percent)—including a 6 of 25 showing from behind the arc—while going 9-for-11 from the free throw line. Carleton, meanwhile, shot 56 percent from the field (30-for-54) with eight 4-pointers and a 10-for-21 effort from the charity stripe.
Kent Hanson led four Carleton players in double figures, finishing with a game-high 21 points, while Matthew Stritzel chipped in 14 points, and Malekai Mischke and Ryan Casperson each added 11.
The Cardinals (0-3 MIAC, 1-5 overall) are back in action on Saturday, returning to the Saint Mary's Gym for a 1 p.m. MIAC showdown with Bethel.
