Border Battle Results
SUPERIOR, Wis. —
Jovan Newsum and
Brandon Krogman kicked off the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams' busy weekend in grand fashion Friday evening at the St. Thomas Showcase.
Make that record-setting fashion.
For the second time this season, Newsum put together a school record-setting performance, shattering school mark in the 5,000—clocking a time of 15:04.16—while Krogman joined his senior teammate with a record-breaking performance of his own, etching his name atop the record books in the 600 with a time of 1:23.19.
Austin O'Hare just missed making a 3-for-3 night for the Cardinals, posting the program's third-best time in the mile, stopping the clock in 4:27.44.
And while the Cardinal trio set the tone Friday evening, the rest of the Saint Mary's squads picked up where they left off Saturday at the UW-Superior Border Battle, collecting three more first-place finishes in the non-team-scored event.
Kyle Lichttenegger shined brightest for the Cardinals on the UW-Superior stage, posting the fastest qualifying time in the 60, clocking a 7.15, before recording a school-record time of 7.03—shattering the old mark of 7.12 set in 1999—to edge UM-Duluth's Beau Bofferding for first in the finals. Lichttenegger also chipped in a second-place showing in the long jump with a leap of 6.70 meters.
Krogman showed no signs of wear from Friday's record-breaking performance, posting his second school-record effort in as many days in winning the 800 with a time of 1:58.27, while Becca Dup set a new school mark in the long jump, winning the event with a leap of 5.53 meters.
Ben Borash and
Dean Marlin each chipped in fourth-place finishes for the Cardinal men—Borash's in the 1,000 (2:42.28) and Marlin's in the triple jump (11.79 meters).
Sherman Moga placed fifth in the mile (4:55.89) and Andrew Alleman finished seventh in 400 (54.27).
Along with the pair of first-place efforts—Dup in the long jump and Molly Sweet in the 1,000 (3:13.61), the Saint Mary's women also got second-place performances from Maria Missurelli in the pole vault (3.15 meters), Bailey Joens in the high jump (1.56 meters), and Kynzie Smedsrud in the 200 hurdles (31.94). Natalie King posted a throw of 14.34 meters to place third in the weight throw, Danielle Franke clocked a third-place time of 11.10.82, and Madison Gueningsman was third in the 200 hurdles (32.31).
Mackenzie Ellefson (60, 8.43) and Maddie Bollig (1,000, 3:45.81) each chipped in fourth-place performances, and Molly Abraham added a fifth (400, 1:08.69).
The Cardinals head to Stevens Point, Wis., next Saturday, competing in the UW-Stevens Point Eastbay Invitational.
