MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — All season long,
Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) has been leading the way for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team.
So it should come as no surprise that the Cardinal senior—competing in his final Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships—was once again leading the pack.
Tonda recorded his fastest time of the season in the 200 IM, shaving three seconds off his previous best to finish 18
th in a time of 2:01.23.
Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa),
Corey Piper (Winona, Minn.), and Nick Sawchuk (Rochester, Minn.) also competed for the Cardinal men during the opening day of the three-day conference championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, posting times of 24.44, 24.60, and 25.03, respectively, in the 50 freestyle.
Lucas Gerads (St. Cloud, Minn.), Piper, Mockler and Sawchuk teamed to post a time of 1:34.57
On the women's side, Chloe Morrison (Ashkum, Ill.) touched the wall in a lifetime-best 6:03.91 to pace three Cardinal finishers in the 500 freestyle. Morrison was joined in the 500 freestyle by Zoe Schaetz (Winona, Minn. / 6;09.68) and Hannah Emeott (Chisago City, Minn. / 6:14.95), while Kizzy Bell (St. Paul, Minn.) chipped in a time of 2:31.19 in the 200 IM.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.), Spencer Johnston (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), Lillian Clarstrom (Blaine, Minn.), and Bell clocked a time of 1:52.75, while the 400 medley relay team—VanBeest, Bell, Johnston, and Schaetz added a time of 4:33.09.
Day 2 of the three-day event kicks off Friday morning with prelims at 10:30 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
