Men's Hockey MIAC Playoff GameDay at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team kicks off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season play on Saturday, traveling to Augsburg's Ed Saugestad Rink for a 7:30 p.m. MIAC Playoff semifinal against the second-seeded Auggies.

How They Got Here:
• Augsburg: The Auggies closed out the regular season with 33 conference points, three points back of regular-season champion St. Thomas to lock down the No. 2 seed. The Auggies boasted a 9-2-5 record in conference play.
• Saint Mary's: The Cardinals finished 9-6-1 in league play for 29 points, a third-place regular-season finish and the No. 3 seed in the five-team playoff field.

• January 27, 2017 * Minneapolis, Minn.: Saint Mary's found itself playing catch-up through the first 40 minutes of its MIAC game against league-leading Augsburg.  Down 2-0 early, the Cardinals netted back-to-back goals to head into the locker room tied 2-2 after the first period. Down 3-2 six minutes into the second period, the Cardinals once again "caught up," scoring six minutes later to once again head into the locker room tied—this time 3-3 after two. Unfortunately, the Cardinals fell behind again in the third, but were not able to net the equalizer, as the 11th-ranked Auggies handed Saint Mary's a 4-3 setback at Ed Saugestad Rink | Recap
• January 28, 2017 * Winona, Minn.: For two periods, the rematch between Saint Mary's and Augsburg at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena proved to be a rather defensive battle—with the Auggies clinging to a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. And what a third period it proved to be. The two teams combined for five goals in the first six minutes—and seven goals overall in the game's final 20-minutes. And when the dust finally cleared, the two teams settled for a wild, 5-5 overtime tie—with Saint Mary's gaining the extra conference point, thanks to a pair of goals in the four-round shootout | Recap

• The Cardinals are making their second MIAC Playoff appearance in the last three seasons. Saint Mary's reached the MIAC Playoff championship game in 2015, falling to Hamline 4-2. … Saint Mary's heads into post-season play having won three of their last four games, while going 3-1-1 in their last five. … The Cardinals are 11-0-0 when holding their opponent to two goals or less. Saint Mary's is 2-9-3 when allowing three or more goals. … With their 3-2 overtime win over Saint John's on Feb. 10, the Cardinals picked up their 13th win of the season—marking the second time in the last three years Saint Mary's has won 12 or more games. … The Cardinals' 3-2 win over Saint John's on Feb. 10 snapped a nine-game overtime winless streak (0-4-5). • The Auggies enter post-season play as the defending MIAC Playoff champions, having beaten Saint John's 5-4 in a thrilling, triple-overtime matchup in the title game. … Last season's MIAC Playoff championship was Augsburg's second in program history, the first coming in 1998.
