MIAC Outdoor Championships—A Year Ago:
May 13-14, 2016 | Saint John's University * Collegeville, Minn.
• MEN: The drive for five was completed, as St. Thomas claimed its fifth-straight MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Clemens Stadium on the campus of Saint John's University. The host Johnnies gave the Tommies a tough test throughout, but UST held its margin from Day 1 to win title No. 5 in a row. The championship is No. 34 overall for St. Thomas, and the 29th since 1983. In fact, outdoor track has been another outstanding chapter in the Tommie-Johnnie rivalry as those two schools have won each of the 34 titles in that span. Saint John's last won in 2011, St. Thomas returned to the top in 2012, and hasn't relinquished the championship since which continued with a fifth-straight title this weekend in Collegeville, Minn., despite Saint John's staying on the Tommies' heels throughout the two-day meet. St. Thomas scored exactly 100 points on Saturday to boost its championship-winning total to 184 points. Saint John's kept pace and finished with 156.5 points to stay solidly in second. Hamline also topped the century mark with 108 points in third, St. Olaf's 98 points were good for fourth and Carleton scored 61 to also join the top five. Bethel was just four points behind the Knights in sixth with 57, Gustavus (55) was another two points back in seventh, Concordia scored 48 in eighth, Augsburg had 40 to finish ninth and Saint Mary's (27) and Macalester (21) completed the final 2016 standings |

• WOMEN: St. Thomas made it a dozen titles in a row with the team's 12th-straight championship at the 2016 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Saint John's University's Clemens Stadium in Collegeville, Minn. UST's latest MIAC title was a dominant performance, with more than a 90-point margin of victory. The championship is the 32nd overall for the Tommies, who have now won 32 of the 35 MIAC Outdoor titles in the meet's history. Head Coach Joe Sweeny has now guided his team to every title since Concordia won in 2004. The Cobbers also won in 1999 and St. Olaf claimed the 1984 title, but it's been St. Thomas in the winner's circle in every other season. St. Thomas scored 191.3 points to nearly double up the rest of the field, with a 91.3-point lead - or more - on everyone else in the MIAC. Carleton moved up into second place on the second day with an even 100 points, and Concordia rounded out the top three with 88.8 points. Gustavus was just three points behind the Cobbers in fourth with 85, and Bethel's 76.5 points were also good for a spot in the top 10. Saint Benedict was sixth with 71 points, St. Olaf (56.3) edged Hamline (56) by less than a point for seventh, Macalester was ninth (49), St. Catherine (42) finished 10th and Augsburg (28) and Saint Mary's (12) rounded out the final standings |

Saint Mary's at MIAC Outdoor Championships—A Year Ago:
• Day 1: It was a busy day for Saint Mary's Madeline Eichers at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. And the Cardinal sophomore made it a memorable one, as well. Eichers posted a career-best throw of 40.4 meters to place seventh in the hammer throw and pace the Cardinal track and field teams during the opening day of the two-day, season-ending conference championships. Eichers was one of three Cardinal individuals to place during Day 1, as
Bryan Ortman added an eighth-placing showing in the long jump (6.55 meters) and
Ross Kinderman chipped in a 10
th in the javelin (45.60 meters). The Cardinal men's 4x800 relay team of
Brandon Krogman,
Jared Wolt,
Jovan Newsum, and
Austin O'Hare also recorded a top-10 performance, posting a seventh-place time of 8:14.56 |
Day 1 Recap
• Day 2: If there's one thing that can be said about Saint Mary's
Maria Missurelli, it's that she's consistent. For the third straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, the Cardinal sophomore recorded a second-place finish in the pole vault. Missurelli, who was second at last season's outdoor championships, and second again at this season's indoor championships in early March, was at it again on Saturday, clearing 3.30 meters en route to her All-MIAC First-Team second-place effort.
Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) and
Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.) led the way for the Cardinal men, placing fourth in the 5,000 and the triple jump, respectively. Fueled by Missurelli on the women's side, and the honorable-mention efforts of Newsum and Ortman on the men's, the Cardinal women finished 12th in the team standings, with the Saint Mary's men placing 10
