WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team had to put in a little overtime Saturday afternoon in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against St. Olaf.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, St. Olaf made the most of the extra period, scoring the game-winning goal with two seconds remaining to lift the Oles to a 2-1 victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
Abby Stets gave the Oles the lead early in the first half, beating Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Gabriella Pederson with a shot in the 13
th minute.
The Ole advantage did not last long, however, as
Becca Dup pulled the Cardinals even 15 minutes later with her fifth goal of the season.
Neither team would be able to find the back of the net over the final 17 minutes of the first half—or the 45 minutes of the second—forcing the game into overtime.
And it looked like the game was headed to a second 10-minute overtime, only to have St. Olaf's Emily Helle beat Pederson with the game-winner off a corner kick with just two seconds remaining in the first extra period.
Pederson and St. Olaf's Brynne Davis each finished with two saves in goal.
The Cardinals (0-2-0 MIAC, 4-3-0 overall) step out of conference play on Wednesday, traveling to River Falls, Wis., for a 4 p.m showdown with UW-River Falls.
