WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota volleyball coach
Jackie Kiecker must have been feeling a serious case of déjà vu as her Cardinals headed to a fifth set in its match against Central-Iowa Saturday afternoon.
After all, it wasn't four hours earlier that the Cardinals were in the exact same predicament—rallying from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to beat Carthage 3-2.
And, fortunately for the first-year head coach, the Cardinals were able to pull out a second straight 3-2 win, beating the Dutch 15-X in the fifth and final set.
For the second time in as many matches Saturday, the Cardinals drop the first and third sets, while winning the second and fourth—and of course, the fifth—to close out the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic with a 3-1 record.
Central-Iowa grabbed the early lead, winning Set 1 25-23, with the Cardinals pulling even with a convincing 25-14 victory in the second set. The Dutch regained the lead with a 25-20 triumph in the third set, but it was all Saint Mary's after that, with the Cardinals taking Set 4 25-17 and Set 5 15-10.
Gloria Kitange (Rochester, Minn.) and
Rachel Kedl (Lamberton, Minn.) led the Cardinals' offensive charge, recording 16 and 15 kills—both career highs—while
Brandi Blattner (Eyota, Minn.) chipped in 10.
Brittney Hanson (Janesville, Iowa) and
Lillian Braun (Kasson, Minn.) shared the setting duties, posting 29 and 28 helpers, respectively,
Clare Tack (St. Charles, Ill._) added 10 digs and four service aces.
The Cardinals (3-1 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, heading to Decorah, Iowa, for a 7 p.m. nonconference match against Luther.
