RIPON, Wis. — For the second game in a row, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team got on the board first Sunday afternoon in its nonconference game against Ripon.
Unlike Friday's season-opening, 4-0 victory over Lawrence, however, the Cardinals weren't able to make that lead stand up, as Ripon scored the game's final two goals—including the game-winner in overtime—as the Red Hawks dealt Saint Mary's a 2-1 setback.
After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals broke through in the game's 63
rd minute, as
Becca Dup (Albert Lea, Minn.)—who assisted on two of Saint Mary's four goals against Lawrence on Friday—beat Ripon goalkeeper Miye Aoki-Kramer to give SMU the 1-0 lead.
A lead that lasted just 12 minutes, however, as Maggie Borque knotted the game at 1-1 with her first of the season, off an assist from Paige Pierce.
And it was Pierce who would then net the game-winner, scoring her fifth goal in Ripon's first two games, rifling a shot that deflected off Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Zoe Boleneus (Spokane, Wash.) and into the net.
Boleneus finished with three saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Aoki-Kramer stopped seven of Saint Mary's eight shots for the Red Hawks.
The Cardinals (1-1 overall) kick off the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday, entertaining Bethany Lutheran in a 7 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
