WINONA, Minn. — There would be no six-goal second-half offensive explosion for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team Wednesday afternoon in its nonconference game against Viterbo.
In fact, after erupting for six goals in the game's final 45 minutes of their season-opening 6-0 win over Crown last Friday, the Cardinals managed just one goal in the second half against the V-Hawks.
And what a timely goal it was.
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) scored his first goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining in regulation—and just four minutes after Viterbo had pulled even with a penalty kick goal—lifting the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
The Cardinals did not waste any time finding the back of the net against the V-Hawks, as
Charles Reit (Arcadia, Wis.) netted his first collegiate goal—taking a feed from
Sean Butcher (Cave Creek, Ariz.) and rifling a shot past Viterbo goalkeeper Ben Kellner.
Saint Mary's would cling to that one-goal lead, thanks in part to play of goalkeeper
Alberto Centeno (Elk Grove Village, Ill.)—who made several diving saves in the second half to keep it a 1-0 Cardinal lead.
Viterbo finally broke through in the 85
th minute, as Jonathan Carli converted on a penalty kick to even the game at 1-1.
The deadlock did not last long, however, as Butcher lofted a pass to Sobczak, who headed the ball past Kellner to give the Cardinals their second win in as many games.
Centeno finished with five saves for the Cardinals—including four in the second half—while Kellner also made five stops in goal for the V-Hawks.
The Cardinals (2-0-0 overall) are back in action this weekend, hosting the BIG Athletics/Adidas M Club Weekend Tournament. Saint Mary's will face Finlandia at 4 p.m. on Sept. 9, before squaring off against either Nebraska Wesleyan or Martin Luther the following day.
