NORTHFIELD, Minn. —Â
Sawyer Rosner (Phelps, Wis.) had a night to remember Wednesday evening, as the freshman scored a career-high 20 points for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's basketball team in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Carleton.
Â
James Cullen (Western Springs, Ill.) also enjoyed a hot-shooting night for the Cardinals, pouring in 18 points.
Â
Unfortunately, while Rosner and Cullen combined for a whopping 38 points, the rest of the squad managed just 30, as Carleton outscored Saint Mary's pulled away in the second half for an 87-68 victory at West Gym.
Â
The Cardinals and Knights were locked in a back-and-forth slugfest over the game's first 20 minutes, as Saint Mary's answered Carleton's game-opening field goal with eight unanswered points for a quick, 8-2 advantage.
Â
Carleton regained the lead, 11-10 with a 9-2 run of its own—and the Knights would never trail again, building leads as big as seven, before settling for a four-point, 34-30, lead at the intermission.
Â
The Knights picked up where they left off to open the second half, using an 18-8 half-opening burst to push its four-point lead to 14, 52-38. Carleton would continue to sizzle from the field, leading by as many as 22, 70-48 en route to its second win over the Cardinals this season.
Â
Along with Rosner's career-night and Cullen's 18-point effort, the Cardinals—who shot 51 percent from the field (29-for-57)—also got 10 points from
Jakob Bailey (Cameron, Wis.)
Â
Carleton, knocking down 35 of its 57 field goals (61 percent), got a game-high 22 points from Kevin Grow. Grow was one of four Knights to score 10 or more points, being joined by Kent Hanson (19), Ryan Casperson (11), and Quinn Johnson (10).
Â
Saint Mary's (0-10 MIAC, 1-14 overall) are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Hamline's Hutton Arena in St. Paul, Minn., for a 1 p.m. showdown against the Pipers.
