ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team set its sights on accomplishing something no other team this year has been able to — beat Macalester on its home turf.
The Scots, however, gave the Cardinals a first-hand look at why they are so untouchable on their home field — scoring three second-half goals to pull away and deal Saint Mary's a 4-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.
Ben Wagner provided the Scots all the offense they would need, netting the first of his two goals on the afternoon in the game's 31
st minute.
Macalester would maintain that one-goal advantage into the halftime break, and through the first 15 minutes of the second half, when Chris Bajek tapped a Floyd Krom pass past Cardinal goalkeeper
Alberto Centeno (Elk Grove Village, Ill.).
Wagner would then ice the Scot win with his second of the game — and third of the season in the 71
st minute.
Centeno finished with four saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Macalester goalkeepers Colton Wenig and Elo Wittig combined for a three-save shutout.
Saint Mary's (2-6-0 MIAC, 5-10-1) closes out the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, hosting Carleton in a 7 p.m. MIAC showdown at Ochrymowycz Field. The Cardinals then hit the road on Saturday, traveling to Moorhead, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. matchup against Concordia.
