BLAINE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team more than doubled its offensive output in its second game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase Saturday evening.
Â
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, three goals was enough for 60 minutes, but it was not enough for 63, as Concordia scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime, handing Saint Mary's a 4-3 setback at the Schwan's Super Rink.
Â
"It's a tough loss, but certainly a learning experience for us," said Saint Mary's coach
Bill Moore. "With so many young players in the lineup, you are going to make mistakes, and we made a couple of miscues tonight that cost us — but that's what happens sometimes."
Â
"I thought we played very well, we just have to avoid making those mistakes that come back to haunt you in the end."
Â
Saint Mary's — which dropped a 3-1 decision to Gustavus in Friday's season-opener — got on the board first against Concordia, as
Kyle Meeh (Fenton, Mo.) scored an unassisted goal midway through the first period.
Â
Concordia answered six minutes later, when Mario Bianchi beat Saint Mary's goalie
Al Rogers (North Haven, Conn.) to knot the game at 1-1.
Â
The teams would trade goals in the second period — Saint Mary's coming on
Owen Sikich's (Wolfeboro, N.H.) first collegiate goal to tie the game at 2-2 — and, despite
Tommy Stang's (Mendota Heights, Minn.) third-period goal, his second goal in as many nights, the game would end deadlocked at 3-3 to force the five-minute overtime period.
Â
And Bianchi would break the stalemate, netting his second of the game 3:31 into overtime to lift the Cobbers to the 4-3 win.
Â
Rogers finished with 23 saves in goal for the Cardinals — including three in the overtime period, while Cam Haugenoe finished with 19 saves in goal for the Cobbers.
Â
The Cardinals (0-2-0 overall) are back in action next weekend with a pair of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games against St. Thomas. Saint Mary's will travel to St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest, before the two teams head to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for Saturday's 7 p.m. rematch.
