MOORHEAD, Minn. —
Josh Balsiger (Camas, Wash.) has enjoyed a career year for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team this season.
And Saturday afternoon, the Cardinal junior capped it off in stellar fashion, scoring his team-leading seventh goal of the season in leading Saint Mary's to a season-ending 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Concordia.
Balsiger — who scored four goals combined in his first two seasons in a Cardinal uniform — gave Saint Mary's all the offense it would need Saturday, scoring goal No. 7 of the season just nine minutes into the opening half.
The Cardinals would carry that one-goal advantage into the halftime break — and through the first 42 minutes of the second half, when
Eli Szymanski (La Crosse, Wis.) gave Saint Mary's some breathing room with his third goal of the season , off an assist from
Klaus Friedli (Marshfield, Wis.).
Alberto Centeno (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) — one of three seniors playing their final collegiate game — stopped both Cobber shots he faced in notching his second shutout of the season.
The Cardinals — who played their final game with seniors Centeno,
Chris Beiersdorf (Arlington Heights, Ill.), and
Daniel Nolte (Owatonna, Minn.) — closed out the year 3-7-0 in MIAC play, while going 6-11-1 overall.
