MOORHEAD, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and Concordia women's soccer teams squared off a year ago in the teams' regular-season finale, they battled for 110 minutes without either team able to score in a 0-0, double-overtime stalemate.
Fast-forward to Saturday afternoon — and another season-finale showdown between the Cardinals and Cobbers.
This time, however, there would be no 0-0 deadlock — but there would be another need for an overtime period.
Saint Mary's and Concordia combined for five goals in their conference showdown. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was the Cobbers who accounted for three of those five goals — including the game-winner two minutes into overtime — as CC dealt Saint Mary's a season-ending 3-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.
Concordia struck in the 10
th minute, as Karsen Granning took a feed from Hannah Sandin and beat Cardinal goalkeeper
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) for a 1-0 Cobber advantage.
The Cobbers netted their second of the opening half in the 32
nd meeting, getting a goal from Kirsten Bokinskie to give CC a two-goal cushion heading into the break.
While the Cobbers dominated the scoreboard in the game's opening 45 minutes, it was the Cardinals — and Michener — were took charge in the second half.
Michener scored the first of her two goals in the 62
nd minute — off an assist from
Kassie Arriaga (Chula Vista, Calif.) — before netting her team-leading 14
th of the season 13 minutes later, thanks to a nifty pass from
Kendall Archer (Draper, Utah), to pull the Cardinals even 2-2.
And send the game into overtime — for a second straight year.
This time, however, the Cobbers were able to break the stalemate, as Kalli Baaarstad beat Pederson 2:45 into the first overtime to lift the Cobbers to the win.
The Cardinals — who bid an official farewell to seniors Michener,
Maddy Wallraff (Blaine, Minn.),
Becca Dup (Albert Lea, Minn.), and
Erin McElligott (New York City, N.Y.) with Saturday's season-finale — closed out the season 2-9-0 in the conference play, while going 8-10-overall.
