WAUKESHA, Wis. — The fact that Wednesday's nonconference game against Carroll went into overtime was no surprise for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team.
After all, it marked the fourth time in the last five games that the Cardinals had played past the 90 minutes of regulation.
What was a surprise, however, was an outcome.
For the first time in those four overtime contests, the end result was not a win — or a loss.
Saint Mary's scored a solo goal early in the first half and Carroll answered with a goal early in the second, as the two teams battled to a 1-1 deadlock.
Charles Reit (Arcadia, Wis.) gave the Cardinals the early lead, netting his third goal of the season just nine minutes into the first half.
Saint Mary's would maintain that one-goal advantage over the remainder of the opening half, but early in the second half — less than five minutes in, to be exact — the Pioneers netted the equalizer off the foot of Austin Schulze.
Neither team would find the back of the net the rest of the second half — or through the two 10-minute overtime periods in settling for the tie.
Michael Maniak (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) finished with five saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Carroll goalkeeper Peter Villafuerte stopped seven of Saint Mary's eight shots.
The Cardinals (4-6-1 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, hosting Saint John's in a 3:30 p.m. matchup at Ochrymowycz Field.
