MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — After managing just one goal — combined — in Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and St. Thomas women's hockey teams turned up the offensive heat a bit in Saturday's rematch.
At least one of the teams did.
Unfortunately for Saint Mary's coach
Greg Moore, it wasn't his Cardinals.
For the second game in a row, the Cardinals could not find a way to get the puck past St. Thomas goalie Mackenzie Torpy — and the Tommie offense, meanwhile, erupted for three third-period goals in dealing Saint Mary's a 4-0 conference setback at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.
For the second straight game, the two teams battled to a 0-0 deadlock after the first period, but, unlike Friday's meeting — when St. Thomas scored the game's only goal early in the third period — the Tommies broke the ice in period No. 2 this time around, as Rachel Werdin found the back of the net at 6:22.
The Tommies would cling to that one-goal advantage until midway through the third period, when Chloe McEnelly and Katie Winecki scored 17 seconds apart to push the lead to 3-0. Allison Parnell added her second goal of the season into an empty net with 1:24 remaining to close out the scoring.
Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) finished with 24 saves in goal for the Cardinals — including 11 in the second period — while Torpy stopped all 14 Saint Mary's shots for her second straight shutout.
The Cardinals (0-2-0 MIAC, 2-2-0 overall) are back in conference play next weekend with a pair of contests against Augsburg. Saint Mary's will host the Auggies in a 7 p.m. matchup at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Friday, before the two teams head to Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis, Minn., for Saturday's 3 p.m. rematch.
