MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey coach
Bill Moore thought he'd seen it all already this season — and then came Friday night.
Moore's Cardinals, who entered Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with 13
th-ranked Augsburg having played six games decided by two goals or less — including a pair of overtime contests.
Make that seven games decided by two goals or less — and three overtime games.
And one crazy ending.
Augsburg scored two unanswered goals — including the game-winner on a penalty shot less than two minutes into overtime — as the Auggies rallied for a 2-1 victory at Ed Saugestad Rink.
"What can I say? It's like we are snake-bit — not matter how well we play, we just can't seem to catch a break," said Moore. "I thought we played extremely well — just not well enough to come away with the win."
After a scoreless first period,
Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta) broke the ice for the Cardinals, scoring is first collegiate goal — off an assist from
Ryan Charko (Warren, N.J. — at 13:25 of the second period.
The Auggies pulled even early in the third period on a goal by Alex Rodriguez at 1:32 of the final stanza, and Eric Brenk gave Augsburg the win, beating Saint Mary's goalie
Nick Nast (Oxnard, Calif.) on a penalty shot 1:14 into overtime.
Nast finished with 22 saves in goal for the Cardinals — including stopping all 15 shots through the first two periods — while Nick Schmit kicked out 20 of the Cardinals' 21 shots in goal for the Auggies.
Saint Mary's (0-2-1 MIAC, 0-6-1 overall) are back in action on Saturday, returning home to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for the 7 p.m. rematch with the Auggies.
