DULUTH, Minn. — It appears as if Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's basketball coach
David Foley has uncovered the perfect combination to achieve a Cardinal victory: 11 points + 10 rebounds.
Thus far this season, that combination has resulted in two straight wins.
For the second game in a row,
Rachel Kedl (Lamberton, Minn.) recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday evening, leading Saint Mary's to a 67-57 nonconference win over St. Scholastica at Reif Gym.
Kedl wasn't the only offensive spark for the Cardinals, however.
Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) poured in a career-high 20 points — including 17 in the second half — as the Cardinals slowly pulled away from the Saints in recording win No. 2 on the season.
Saint Mary's rebounded from a slow start that saw St. Scholastica score six of the game's first eight points, answering with a quarter-ending 14-9 run to grab a 16-15 lead.
The Cardinals outscored St. Scholastica 12-9 in the second quarter to push their lead to 28-23 heading into the halftime break. Saint Mary's continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring CSS 25-20 in the third quarter, before each team netted 14 fourth-quarter points for the final 10-point margin.
Paulson was virtually unstoppable over the game's final 20 minutes, going 7-for-10 from the field with three 3-pointers en route to her career-best 20-point effort. Kedl — who did not have a career double-double before her first 11-point, 10-rebound showing against Nebraska Wesleyan last Saturday — finished 3-for-8 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line, while adding five offensive and five defensive rebounds.
The Cardinals shot 37 percent from the field (24-for-64) and were 5 of 19 from behind the 3-point line, while also adding a 14 of 17 showing from the free throw line.
St. Scholastica, meanwhile, hit on 44 percent of its field goal attempts (22-for-50) with five 3-pointers, and added an 8-for-14 effort from the line. Kaylee Kennedy netted 15 points and Michala Walther added 10 in the losing effort for St. Scholastica (0-3 overall), which is still looking for its first win of the season.
The Cardinals (2-1 overall) are back in action on Saturday, when they kick off the home portion of their schedule with a 1 p.m. nonconference game against Bethany Lutheran at the Saint Mary's Gym.
