MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — After back-to-back record-setting days at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, it seemed safe to assume that
Griffin Rades (Shawano, Wis.) might be feeling a bit tired during the third and final day of the three-day event.
Not a chance.
After all, Rades is proving to be the Cardinals' very own Energizer Bunny—he just keeps going, and going, and going …
After rewriting the school record books in both the 200 and 400 IM—not the mention Saint Mary's 19-year-old 200 freestyle record—during Days 1 and 2, Rades turned his attention to the 200 breaststroke on Saturday—and put together his best-ever time in the event, posting a ninth-place time of 2:15.40 during the morning preliminaries.
In the B Final, the third time the freshman reached the evening finals—placing first in Thursday's 200 IM B Final with a school-record time of 1:56.35 and fourth in the A Final in Friday's 400 IM with another school-record effort of 4:11.11—Rades was back to his record-setting self, etching his name once more in the record books with a winning time of 2:12.47.
Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) cut 10 seconds off his season-best in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:23.78, while
Jack Wells (Glenview, Ill.) and Nick Sawchuk recorded times of 50.53 and 53.96, respectively, in the 100 freestyle for the Cardinal men.
On the women's side,
Claire King (Red Wing, Minn.) posted a time of 58.88 in the 100 freestyle, with
Erica Camarato (Deforest, Ill.) chipping in a 2:50.05 in the 200 breaststroke and
Emme Quandt (Shawano, Wis.) adding a 2:32.61 in the 200 butterfly. The Cardinal trio of
Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.),
Alyssa Haram (Maple Grove, Minn.), and
Amanda Hansen (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), meanwhile, delivered times of 19:22.86, 20:06.46, and 20:21.47, respectively, in the 1,650 freestyle. In diving,
Kierra Walske (Rochester, Minn.) placed 14
th (275.40), while
Kayla Boettcher was 17
th (266.55).
DAY 2 IN REVIEW: Rades set—then re-set—the school record in the 400 IM, swimming a time of 4:15.52 in the preliminaries, before shattering that mark with a 4:11.11 fourth-place finish in the A Finals. And the freshman wasn't finished—leading off the Cardinals' 800 freestyle relay, Rades set school-record No. 5, swimming the first 200 yards in 1:46.96—besting the 19-year-old record held by Rick Loeffelholz. … King and Mockler both narrowly missed reaching the B Final in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, respectively. King clocked a season-best 1:05.60 to finish 17
th—while Mockler matched that 17
th-place showing with his 100 breaststroke time of 1:02.91. … Walske finished 14
th in the 3-meter diving (286.90), while Quandt chipped in a time of 1:07.70 in the 100 butterfly, and the trio of Shefchik (2:08.69), Haram (2:13.06), and Hansen (2:14.04) all competed in the 200 freestyle. … On the men's side,
Jack Wells (Glenview, Ill.) and Sawchuk posted times of 1:53.86 and 2:01.69 in the 200 freestyle, while the 200 medley relay finished seventh in 1:43.48, and the 800 freestyle also placed seventh in 7:33.70 |

th, while the 400 medley relay team placed 10
