WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg got exactly what he wanted from his Cardinals when they faced North Central on Friday night.
The Cardinals ended their three-game losing streak in grand fashion by beating the Rams 9-0. Not only that, but the Cardinals won every game too—all three doubles teams won 8-0, while all six singles matches were won 6-0, 6-0.
Two of those shutouts came from the play of senior
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.), who won on court one in singles and doubles.
He said his game has gotten much better over his four years at Saint Mary's, because he's become a smarter and stronger player.
"I know how to set points up and put balls away better," he said.
Halberg agreed.
"He's developed from a steady player to someone who plays with a real attacking quality at a very high level," Halberg said. "He's a hard worker, he always gives his best, and shows his high intelligence by make adjustments mid-game," he said.
Amiotte said he's also grown as a leader by being there for his teammates.
"I make sure everyone is putting in hard work, but also having fun," he said. "I've also learned how to cheer people up after a tough loss."
Halberg said Amiotte is a leader by example.
"He's a great role model, and he shows teammates what it takes to succeed," said Halberg. "He's always been a huge part of any success we've had."
Amiotte and Cardinals will look to continue their success as they travel to Fargo, N.D., to play Concordia College at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 18 at Courts Plus Community Fitness.
