WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team entered Tuesday's nonconference match against UW-River Falls owning a perfect 15-0 record in the teams' last 15 meetings.
Make that 16-0 in their last 16 meetings.
The Cardinals won all six singles matches—including five in straight sets—in dealing the Falcons an 8-1 nonconference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"We played really well tonight," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "This is a great way to head into break."
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches—getting an 8-0 win from
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) and
Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) at No. 1 and an 8-1 win from
Ashley Frederickson (St. James, Minn.)/
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.).
And then came the singles—and the Cardinal domination.
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) and
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) did not lose a game at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, while
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) and Frederickson lost just one game, and Sonday dropped only two.
The Cardinals (10-7 overall)—winners of five straight—are now off until April 13, when they travel to St Paul, Minn., for a 4 p.m. conference match against St. Catherine.
