NORTHFIELD, Minn. — This time around,
Becca Dup was not going to be denied.
Less than 24 hours after being dethroned as the queen of the long jump at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, Dup returned to the top spot on the podium—blowing away the field in the triple jump Saturday.
Dup—who entered Friday's long jump competition as the reigning champion, but had to settle for second behind St. Catherine's Tori Thompson—left little doubt in the triple jump, delivering a school-record leap of 11.70 that left the rest of the field in the dust.
And Dup's effort in the triple jump—the 17
th-longest leap in NCAA Division III this season—was just the start of the Cardinals' record-setting afternoon.
Not to be left out of the school-record onslaught,
Maria Missurelli made the most of her final MIAC Championships, breaking her own school mark in the pole vault, clearing 3.56 meters to claim her first conference title.
Fueled by their record-setting efforts, the Cardinal women placed ninth in the team standings, while the Saint Mary's men placed 10
th. St. Thomas cruised to both team titles, outdistancing Saint John's 198.50-114.40 on the men's side, and beating runner-up Saint Benedict 186.50-92.00 on the women's side.
With her triple jump title locked away, Dup also joined
Portia Mensah,
Alexis Floresca, and
Hannah Crowe to record school-record No. 3 on the day, stopping the clock in 49.39. Floresca capped off her first collegiate MIAC Championships in grand fashion, placing fifth in the 100 (12.55).
Brandon Krogman and
Austin O'Hare closed out their collegiate track and field careers in stellar fashion—Krogman placed third in the 800 with a time of 1:53.47, while O'Hare posted a fifth-place effort in the steeplechase, recording a time of 9:36.41.
Connor Nicholas,
Desmond Steward, and
Christian Beamer also posted top-10 performances for the Saint Mary's men. Nicholas finished sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.67 meters, while Steward placed eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.43 meters, and Beamer cleared 1.84 meters to finish eighth in the high jump. Steward also teamed with
Matthew Boone, Andrew Allemann, and
Kyle Lichttenegger to finish sixth in the 4x100 relay, clocking a time of 44.01.
Eric Ohde placed 13
th in the hammer (39.63m) and 20
th in the discus (35.38m), and
Isaiah Olsem added a 26
th-place showing in the 5,000, finishing with a time of 16:11.60.
Lichttenegger, who quailed for the final in both the 100 and 200, suffered an injury during the 4x100 relay, and was unable to run either event, but the junior did complete both races—walking from start to finish—to earn the Cardinal men a pair of conference points.
