NEW ULM, Minn. — If the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team's offensive performance in its first two games is any indication, coach
Corbin Bowers is going to be one happy man.
For the second game in a row, the Cardinals erupted for three goals—including a second goal in as many games by
Eli Szymanski (La Crosse, Wis.)—as Saint Mary's tallied three goals in the second half in handing Martin Luther a 3-0 setback.
The Cardinals dominated the first half, holding a 9-0 advantage in shots through the first 20 minutes, and held a commanding 15-6 edge in shots—including 7-2 in shots on goal—by halftime.
Unfortunately, the score was still deadlocked at 0-0.
Saint Mary's got on the board five minutes into the second half on a Martin Luther own goal, before Szymanski and
Charles Reit (Arcadia, Wis.) found the b ack of the net 11 minutes apart midway through to ice the win.
Michael Maniak (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) and
Jimmy Perreault (Batavia, Ill.) combined on the shutout in goal for Saint Mary's, with Maniak stopping all three shots he faced in 75 minutes of work, while Perreault did not have to make a save in the game's final 15 minutes.
The Cardinals (2-0 overall) are back in action on Tuesday, traveling to St. Bonifacius, Minn., for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against Crown.
