WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's volleyball team had so much fun playing a five-set match earlier in the day, the Cardinals figured they'd do it again in their second.
Â
Fresh off a 3-2 win over Edgewood in their first match Saturday at the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic, the Cardinals found themselves stretched to the limit in match No. 2—with the same positive outcome.
Â
The Cardinals, down 2-1, rallied for a 25-22 win in Set 4, and added a 15-12 win the fifth set in dropping Luther 3-2 to complete a perfect 4-0 run through the two-day tournament.
Â
Lillian Braun (Kasson, Minn.), who delivered a career-best 49 assists in Saint Mary's 3-2 win over Edgewood, was even better against Luther, dishing out a new career-high 62 assists—many to teammate
Brandi Blattner, who hammered out 21 kills.
Â
Blattner also recorded 15 digs for her second straight double-double, while
Rachel Kedl (Lamberton, Minn.) and
Coral Anderson (Rogers, Minn.) chipped in 17 and 14 kills, respectively.
DeJaye Baab (Wabasha, Minn.) posted a career-best 26 digs, with Carly Cronen (Kandiyohi, Minn.) and
Grace Gilles (Apple Valley, Minn.) added 17 and 11 digs, respectively.
Â
Karissa Kime tallied 17 kills and Sam Sixta (26) and Grace Meyers (19) combined for 45 assists in the losing effort for Luther.
Â
The Cardinals (4-0 overall) are back in action next Friday and Saturday, traveling to Stevens Point, Wis., to take part in the UW-Stevens Point Invitational. Saint Mary's will face host UW-Stevens Point on Friday, before squaring off against Lakeland and Concordia (Wis.) on Saturday.
