WINONA, Minn. — For the second time in as many games, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team found themselves deadlocked at the end of regulation.
And, unfortunately for coach
Corbin Bowers and the Cardinals, for the second time in as many games, it was Saint Mary's that came out on the short end of an overtime decision.
Just three days after surrendering the game's only goal less than two minutes into the second overtime of a 1-0 loss to Loras, the Cardinals were snake-bit again — as Augsburg broke a 1-1 tie six minutes into the extra session in leading the Auggies to a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win Saturday at Ochrymowycz Field.
Augsburg grabbed the upper hand early, as Lionel Vang scored his first goal of the season, beating Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Alberto Centeno (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) in the game's 24
th minute.
The Auggies clung to that lead the rest of the first half and for the majority of the second — before
Josh Balsiger (Camas, Wash.) found the back of the net with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to pull the Cardinals even.
And send the Cardinals into overtime for the second straight game.
With the same heartbreaking result, as Nick Zuchowski netted the game-winner — his fifth goal of the season — less than seven minutes into the extra frame.
Centeno finished with four saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Garrett Kaelin stopped nine of the Cardinals' 10 shots on goal for the win for Augsburg.
The Cardinals (0-3 MIAC, 3-5 overall) hit the road on Tuesday, traveling to Bethel's Ona Orth Athletic Complex for a 4 p.m. conference matchup against the Royals.
