DUBUQUE, Iowa — After erupting for 13 goals in their first three games, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team's high-powered offensive juggernaut was eerily quiet Saturday morning.
The Cardinals — riding a season-opening three-game winning streak that included wins over Martin Luther (4-0), Lawrence (7-0), and UW-Stout (2-1) — could not get its offense on track against 22
nd-ranked Loras, as the Duhawks dealt Saint Mary's its first loss of the season, 2-0.
Loras did not waste a lot of time getting on the board, as Jenny Wick netted her fisrt of the season in the ninth minute. Gretchen Schutz pushed the Duhakws' lead to 2-0 with her first of the year 18 minutes later.
And two goals was more than enough, as the Duhawk defense smothered the Cardinals' potent offensive attack, limiting Saint Mary's to just one shot on goal.
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) was busy between the pipes for the Cardinals, finishing with nine saves.
The Cardinals (3-1-0 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, traveling to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a 1 p.m. nonconference game against Coe.
