WINONA, Minn. ā This was the kind of game Saint Mary's men's hockey coach
Bill Moore has been waiting all season for.
Ā
The Cardinals nearly scored as many goals in Saturday's rematch against Concordia Saturday afternoon as there were goals scored in Friday's 5-3 Concordia victory in the first game of the two-game series.
Ā
Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta) scored twice, as the Cardinals erupted for a season-high seven goals in routing the Cobbers 7-2 at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena āĀ and dealing Concordia its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss of the season.
Ā
The Cardinals' offense exploded in the first period, scoring three times within the game's opening 10 minutes.
Ā
Owen SikichĀ (Wolfeboro, N.H.) opened the scoring less than two minutes into the first period, and a minute later,
Jack Hatton (Naperville, Ill.) pushed that advantage to 2-0.
Jack Stang (Mendota Heights, Minn.) would add to the Saint Mary's lead with a goal midway through the frame, as the Cardinals took a commanding 3-0 lead into the locker room after the game's opening 20 minutes.
Ā
And the Cardinals were just getting warmed up.
Ā
Tommy Stang (Mendota Heights, Minn.) pushed the Saint Mary's lead to 4-0, and Stoynich would net back-to-back tallies to make it 6-0 midway through the third period.
Ā
Concordia's Mario Bianchi foiled Saint Mary's goalie
Al Rogers' (New Haven, Conn.) shutout bid with a power-play goal at 11:40, only to have Saint Mary's
Ryan Charko (Warren, N.J.) answer with a power-play goal of his own two minutes later to make it 7-1.
Ā
Rogers finished with 20 saves in goal for Saint Mary's, while Jacob Stephan made 30 saves in goal for Concordia.
Ā
The Cardinals (2-4-2 MIAC, 3-10-3 overall) will return to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Thursday, hosting UW-Stout in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game.
