WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team is just one match into the 2019 season — and already a pair of lengthy streaks have been extended.
The Cardinals cruised to a 9-0 nonconference win over Martin Luther Friday evening at the Winona Tennis Center — giving Saint Mary's its fourth straight 9-0 season-opening victory, and its 12
th consecutive win over the Knights
"The ladies started the season with a great win," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We have some kinks to work out, but I can not complain about how we competed."
The Cardinals opened with a pair of 8-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, while
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) and
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) were taken to a tie-breaker before winning 8-7 (3) at No. 1.
Things went much more smoothly in singles, where Saint Mary's won all six matches in straight sets — dropping just nine games. Lois and
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) led the way, each posting 6-0, 6-0 wins. Boeve's win extended her singles winning streak to 11 straight matches.
The Cardinals (1-0 overall) are back in action on Friday, hosting Northwestern in a 6 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
