WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams had one final tune-up before the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships — and one final time to strut their stuff in front of the home crowd.
And the Cardinals did not disappoint.
The Cardinal women, led by Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.), picked up a pair of dual-meet wins — beating Hamline 108-94 and Augsburg 124-78 — while the Saint Mary's men dropped a 152-41 decision to the Pipers.
Shefchik was a busy — and very successful — Cardinal Saturday, as the sophomore picked up three first-place finishes, winning the 100 breaststroke (1:17.40), the 500 freestyle (5:49.44) and the 1,000 freestyle (11:53.60).
Amanda Hansen (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Kierra Walske (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in a pair of seconds — Hansen's in the 100 backstroke (1:16.40) and 1000 freestyle (12:54.97), and Walske's in the one-meter (175.75) and three-meter (190.75) — while Claire King (Red Wing, Minn. / 200 freestyle, 2:17.28) and Katie Beitz (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / 50 freestyle, 27.84) also delivered second-place efforts.
Jack Wells (Glenview, Ill.) won the one-meter diving (172.00) and
Cole Stepanovich (St. Francis, Wis.) recorded a second-place effort in the 200 freestyle (2:03.38) to lead the way for the Cardinal men.
The Cardinals are now off until Feb. 14-17, when they head to the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus to take part in the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championshps.
