WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team found themselves in a rather familiar position Saturday afternoon in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Gustavus — heading into overtime.
For the fourth time in their last six games, the Cardinals finished 60 minutes of regulation deadlocked — this time a 1-1 stalemate with Gustavus.
And for the fifth time this season, the game would remain a tie, as Saint Mary's and Gustavus closed out their two-game conference series with a 1-1 decision at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
"I actually thought we played very well all weekend — but I was really pleased with the way we bounced back after last night," said Saint Mary's coach
Greg Moore, whose Cardinals dropped a 6-0 decision to the Gusties on Friday night in St. Peter, Minn. "We played hard from start to finish today, and when we do that, we are tough to beat."
Saturday's rematch looked eerily similar to Friday night's, as the two teams battled to a 0-0 draw through the game's opening 20 minutes.
Unlike Friday, however — when the Gusties scored three times in the first four minutes of the second period — it was the Cardinal who would strike first, getting a goal by
Carson Sheridan () at 13:29.
The lead did not last long, however, as Gustavus answered three minutes later when Lilla Scheid beat Saint Mary's goalie
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) for her seventh goal of the season.
Neither team would be able to find the back of the net for the remainder of regulation — thanks in large part to the play of Ziakas, who made 15 saves in the second period, 12 more in the third, and stopped the lone shot she faced in the five-minute overtime.
The Cardinals — who have now played six overtime games (1-0-5) square off against Bethel in a pair of MIAC contests next weekend. Saint Mary's will face BU in a 7 p.m. showdown on Friday at the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine, Minn., before returning home to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for Saturday's 4 p.m. rematch
