WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown against Bethel with a pair of streaks in tact.
Â
The Cardinals — looking to snap out of a season-high in a three-game losing streak — squared off against Bethel riding a three-game winning streak against the Royals and were unbeaten in their last four meetings (3-0-1).Â
Â
But when the final horn sounded, only one would remain.
Â
And thanks to
Johnluke Nahorski (Minnetonka, Minn.), it was the Cardinals' dominance of the Royals, as the SMU sophomore scored in the final minute of the first overtime, lifting Saint Mary's to a 2-1 victory — snapping their three-game slide and pushing their unbeaten streak against the Royals to 4-0-1.
Â
The Royals had the upper hand in the first half, netting the only goal of the opening 45 minutes when Brandon Martinez-Luehmann beat Cardinal goalkeeper
Sam Morris (Hockinson, Wash.) in the 38th minute.
Â
Bethel maintained that one-goal advantage until the 77th minute, when Szymanski broke through with his sixth goal of the season — off an assist from
Marco Hernandez — to knot the game at 1-1.
Â
And set up Nahorski's overtime heroics.
Â
Morris finished with five saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Colin Hupert stopped eight of Saint Mary's 12 shots on goal for the Royals.
Â
After back-to-back home games, the Cardinals (2-4-0 MIAC, 4-8-0 overall) take to the road on Wednesday, heading to Northfield, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. MIAC showdown against Carleton. The Royals (1-5-0 MIAC, 6-7-0 overall) are back on the road on Wednesday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. conference matchup against Gustavus.
