WINONA, Minn. — Saint Benedict clamped down on Saint Mary's University's
Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) — keeping the Cardinals' red-hot sophomore off the scoreboard just three days after she recorded her first collegiate hat trick in SMU's 4-3 overtime loss to St. Olaf.
Â
Unfortunately for coach
Neil Cassidy, the rest of the Cardinal offense was equally silent, as Saint Benedict parlayed single goals in each half into a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
Roxy Veldman proved to be a real thorn in the Cardinals' side Saturday, as the CSB sophomore netted both Bennie goals — the first 2:44 into the opening half and the second with 29:01 remaining in regulation.
Â
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) finished with four saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Kayli Thulin and Paige Kahlmeyer combined on the shutout for CSB, with Thulin stopping the lone shot she faced, while Kahlmeyer made a pair of saves.
Â
The Cardinals (0-5-0 MIAC 5-5-0 overall) are back on their home turf at Ochrymowycz Field on Monday, hosting UW-Superior in a 7 p.m. nonconference game. The Bennies (3-0-1 MIAC, 6-2-2 overall) are now off until next Saturday, when they host Gustavus in a 3:30 p.m. MIAC matchup at CSB Soccer Field in St. Joseph, Minn.
