MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team waited until the last possible second to record its first win of the season — a 3-2, overtime victory over Concordia Friday evening.
Â
In the team's rematch Saturday afternoon, Saint Mary's waited just 37 seconds to score its first goal — and the Cardinal offense never slowed down, rolling scoring a season-high five goals in completing the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep with a 5-0 victory at Moorhead Sports Center.
Â
Kyle Meeh (Fenton, Mo.) — coming off a two-assist night on Friday — put the Cardinals out front with his first goal of the game 37 seconds into the opening period, and
Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia) tacked on his first as a Cardinal at 16:10, as Saint Mary's took a 2-0 lead into the locker room after the game's opening 20 minutes.
Â
The Cardinals got another collegiate first to push their lead to 3-0, as
Ian Currie netted his first goal in a Saint Mary's uniform at 11:18, giving Saint Mary's a commanding 3-0 advantage heading into the third period.
Â
Three goals, however, wasn't enough for the Cardinals, as they continued to light the lamp in the third, getting a second goal from Meeh — his second career two-goal game — and another from
Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta) before the period was even four minutes old to make it 5-0.
Â
While the Cardinal offense was clicking on all cylinders at one end,
Nick Nast (Oxnard, Calif.) was performing a perfect imitation of a brick wall, as the junior stopped all 26 shots he faced en route to his second career shutout.
Â
The Cardinals (2-0-0 MIAC, 2-3-1 overall) —who swept the Cobbers for the first time since Nov. 12-13, 2010 — are now off until Nov. 26, when they return home to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against Milwaukee School of Engineering. The Cobbers (0-2-0 MIAC, 2-3-0 overall) are right back in action Tuesday, squaring off against Hamline in a nonconference game at the St. Michael-Albertville Arena in St. Michael, Minn.
