WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown against No. 19 St. Thomas riding a four-game winning streak — not to mention a five-game unbeaten streak.
Â
The Tommies took to the Ochrymowycz Field turf equally as red-hot, having won their last six in a row — and were sporting an eight-game unbeaten streak.
Â
Something had to give in the teams' regular-season finale.
Â
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was their red-hot, season-ending run, as St. Thomas scored the game's only goal with 12 seconds remaining in the second overtime, lifting the Tommies to a 1-0 victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
The Cardinals gave the nationally ranked Tommies all they could handle for more than 109 minutes, before UST's Kaley Roberts broke the scoreless deadlock with her fourth of the season with 12 seconds remaining in overtime No. 2.
Â
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) — playing her final collegiate game — finished with a season-high eight saves for the Cardinals, while UST's Olivia Elvidge stopped all three Saint Mary's shots en route to the shutout.
Â
Saturday's contest was the season finale for the Cardinals, who closed out the year with 10-7-1 overall record — marking the highest win total since 2007, when Saint Mary's also closed out the year 10-7-1. The loss to the Tommies dropped the Cardinals to 3-7-1 in conference play.
