ORLANDO, Fla. — For the second day in a row, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team squared off against the Panthers Tuesday afternoon.
Fortunately for Cardinal coach
Jeff Halberg, this time around, Saint Mary's left the U.S. National Tennis Center with a victory.
Less than 24 hours after dropping a 6-1 decision to NCAA Division II Davenport — Panthers No. 1 — the Cardinals got back on the winning track, dispatching of Hanover — Panthers No. 2 — 6-3 in Saint Mary's final spring trip match.
"This was a big win for the ladies," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg, noting that Hanover is the reigning Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament champion and owners of 12 wins in their first 16 matches this season. "We really stepped up our game today — it was an awesome performance all the way around."
The Cardinals picked up wins by
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) and
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) at No. 1 doubles and
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) and
Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) at No. 2 to grab a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches.
Sonday and Lois posted dominating singles victories — Sonday winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 and Lois adding a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 — while
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) and
Madyson Schreiber (Edwardsville, Ill.) also chipped in straight-set singles wins to complete the victory.
The Cardinals (3-5 overall) are now off until March 8, when they head to St. Paul, Minn., for a 6:30 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Macalester.
