WINONA, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey coach
Greg Moore, there was good news, and there was bad news Saturday afternoon.
The good news … the Cardinals scored first in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rematch against nationally ranked Hamline Saturday afternoon.
The bad news … the high-powered Pipers answered that first-period Saint Mary's tally by scoring seven unanswered goals in dealing the Cardinals a 7-1 setback at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Carolyn Chrastka (Franklin Park, Ill.) got things off on a positive note for the Cardinals, tipping a
Delaney Wolf (Bismarck, N.D.) shot past Hamline goalie McKenna Hulsland for her fourth goal of the season with 2:47 remaining in the opening period.
The lead did not last long, however, as Hamline answered Chrastka's goal with a goal by Molly Garin with 10 seconds left on the first-period clock.
That late first-period goal seemed to get the Pipers' high-octane offense shifted out of neutral — and over the game's final 40 minutes it was pedal to the metal, as Hamline erupted for four second-period goals — including a pair of Leah Schwartzman — and Olivia Arkell added back-to-back goals a minute apart midway through the third period to close out the scoring.
Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) finished with 31 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Hulsland faced just seven Saint Mary's shots, stopping six of them.
The Cardinals (4-8-4 MIAC, 7-10-6) close out the regular-season portion of their schedule next weekend with a pair of conference games against St. Olaf. Saint Mary's heads to the St. Olaf Ice Arena in Northfield, Minn., for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Oles next Friday, before the two teams head to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for the rematch at 4 p.m. the following afternoon.
