JACKSON, Wis. — For the second time in their last three matches, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team played a match decided by the narrowest of margins.
And, unfortunately for the Cardinals, the end result was the same, as Concordia (Wis.) dealt Saint Mary's a heartbreaking 5-4 nonconference setback Sunday at Pleasant Valley Tennis Center.
"It was another heartbreaking loss for the guys," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We played well, top-to-bottom, against a very talented team. The key for us right now is figuring out a way to get off to a better start in doubles."
The Cardinals dropped two of the three doubles matches against the Falcons, with
Bobby Tiedemann (Euclid, Minn.) and
Trevor Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.) teaming for an 8-6 victory at No. 1.
Smiley,
Gabe Graves (Columbine, Colo.), and
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Min.) chipped in singles wins for the Cardinals — including Sobczak's three-set, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-5 win at No. 3 — but it was too little, too late.
The Cardinals (5-10 overall) are back in action next weekend with a pair of conference matches. Saint Mary's will host Hamline in a 5:30 p.m. contest at the Winona Tennis Center on Friday, before heading to Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville, Minn., for a 1 p.m. showdown with Saint John's.
