WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team entered Friday's conference showdown against Macalester looking to do something no team has been able to do this season — beat the Scots.
Macalester, however, wasn't about to allow the Cardinals to put the first dent in its armor, as the Scots made Saint Mary's their seventh straight victim with a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Lifetime Fitness.
"It was a tough match for the men tonight," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We started with singles and they were just too steady for us at the start and got a lead that we couldn't overcome. I give credit to Macalester, they came ready to fight tonight."
The No. 1 doubles pairing of
Bobby Tiedemann (Euclid, Minn.) and
Trevor Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.) fought hard, losing just 8-6. The rest of the Cardinal team did not have much luck either, falling to the Scots 9-0 at both No. 2 and No. 3.
The Cardinals (0-4 MIAC, 4-6 overall) are back in action on Sunday, returning home to the Winona Tennis Center for an 11 a.m. MIAC showdown against Hamline.
