WINONA, MINN. – The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team was on a roll entering Friday evening's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Carleton.
The Cardinals were riding a historic 11-match win streak and were hoping to end the conference regular season on a high note.
The Knights, however, had other ideas, as No. 32 Carleton dealt the Cardinals an 8-1 at the Winona Tennis Center.
"If our streak has to end, at least it took a nationally ranked team to do it," Saint Mary's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg said after the match. "We played well but credit to Carleton. They are a deep team."
The Cardinals lone win of the match came in singles play, as first year
Madyson Schreiber (Edwardsville, Ill.) was victorious as the team's No. 5 singles player. Schreiber dropped the first set of the match 6-4 but was looking to take the second set and found herself ahead 2-1 after the initial three points. Her opponent, Carleton's Taylor Thulson, was forced to retire at that point due to injury, allowing Schreiber to win the match and extend her win streak to seven consecutive matches.
Saint Mary's fought valiantly in its other singles matches but was unable to come away with a victory. Senior
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) battled at the No. 1 singles spot, falling eventually by a final score of 3-6, 4-6, while
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) fell at the No. 2 spot by scores of 1-6, 1-6. No. 3 player
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) was defeated 2-6, 2-6, while
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) was unable to close her MIAC regular season career with a win, as she lost 0-6, 1-6 as the Cardinals No. 4 player.
Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) was the final singles player on the court for Saint Mary's. The Cardinals No. 6 player battled like her teammates but eventually fell 3-6, 1-6.
Saint Mary's was unable to win any matches in doubles play, as Carleton took all three matches to take an early 3-0 lead over the Cardinals in the dual. The No. 2 team of Barr and Morgan put up a fight but fell 8-3. The No. 1 team of Sonday and Lois dropped their match 8-2 loss, while Boeve and
Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) lost 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.
With the loss, the Cardinals record now stands at 13-6 overall and they are 6-4 in MIAC play. Saint Mary's will conclude the regular season on Saturday, April 13 with a nonconference match against Luther College. First serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minnesota.
