DULUTH, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's and women's golf teams kicked off their seasons Friday afternoon, competing in the Twin Ports Collegiate, hosted by St. Scholastica and UW-Superior.
And after the opening rounds of the 36-hole tournaments, both Cardinal teams found themselves in the same spot — sitting in third place in the eight-team fields.
Bryce Galewski (Winona, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinal men, shooting a three-over-par 74 on the par-71 Lester Park GC layout — leaving him in second place individually, one shot back of tournament leader Sam Albrecht of UW-Superior.
Fueled by Galewski's effort, the Cardinals posted a first-day 325 team score — just 14 shots back of first-round leader UW-Superior.
Cooper Craiger (Des Moines, Iowa) chipped in an 80 for the Cardinals, followed by
Joe Abdo (Edina, Minn. / 85),
Josh Hill (St. Michael, Minn. / 86), and
Blair Sanders (Kansas City, Mo. / 89).
Jessica Massimo (Kenosha, Wis.) turned in an opening-round 92 to fuel the Cardinal women to a 390 opening-day performance St. Scholastica leads the women's field at 345, while UW-Eau Claire is second at 355.
Along with Massimo's effort, the Cardinals also got 98s from Dani Stevens (Delano, Minn.) and Celeste Van Klein (Lake City, Minn.), while Madyson Ulrey (North Manchester, Ind.) added a 102 and Cassie Sepp (Duluth, Minn.) chipped in a 109.
Both Cardinal teams return to the links on Saturday, this time heading to Nemadji Golf Course in Superior, Wis., for the final 18 holes of the two-day tournament.
