WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team headed into Friday night's nonconference game against Central-Iowa looking to do something no team had been able to do this season — beat the Dutch.
Â
Unfortunately, thanks to a late first-half Dutch goal, Saint Mary's became Central's sixth straight victim, falling 1-0 at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
The Cardinals nearly battled Central to a first-half stalemate, but Tony Cervelli broke free and rifled a shot past Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Michael Maniak (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) with less than three minutes remaining to give the Dutch a 1-0 advantage.
Â
An advantage Central would maintain through the entire second half — thanks in part to goalkeeper Andrew Mathys, who robbed Saint Mary's
Josh Balsiger (Camas, Wash.) with a diving save with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
Â
Sam Morris (Hockinson, Wash.), who came on in relief of Maniak after halftime, stopped all five Central shots he faced.
The Cardinals (2-2-0 overall) are back in action on Thursday, heading to Minneapolis, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. nonconference game against North Central.
