WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer was in a streak-snapping mood Saturday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field.
The Cardinals needed to put in a little extra work to snap a two-game losing streak — picking up their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win in dramatic fashion.
But for coach
Corbin Bowers and the Cardinals, the three minutes of extra work was worth the wait.
Eli Szymanski (La Crosse, Wis.) scored the game-winning goal 2:26 into overtime, lifting the Cardinals to 4-3 win over Augsburg — and putting an end to a 13-game losing streak against the Auggies.
Augsburg got on the board first on a goal by Drew Collins in the 33
rd minute, but the Cardinals had an answer, as
Jacob Clements (Holmen, Wis.) netted his fourth of the season with less than three minutes remaining in the half to pull Saint Mary's even 1-1 at the break.
The Cardinals did not waste any time coming out of the break to take control, getting back-to-back goals from
Josh Balsiger (Camas, Wash.) and Armin Jaenac (Brooklkyn Center, Minn.) a minute apart early in the second half to give Saint Mary's a 3-1 advantage.
An advantage they would maintain until the 82
nd minute, when the Auggies to a page out of Saint Mary's playbook, scoring twice in a 20-second span to make it a 3-3 contest — sending the game into overtime.
And setting up Szymanski's OT heroics.
Jimmy Perreault (Batavia, Ill.) certainly did his part in helping the Cardinals beat the Auggies for the first time since a 2-0 win on Oct. 15, 2005 — stopping a career-high 12 shots, several of the acrobatic variety.
The Cardinals (1-1-0 MIAC, 5-5-0 overall) are back in conference play on Tuesday, heading to Northfield, Minn., for a 4 p.m. showdown against St. Olaf.
