ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Fresh off a 3-1 win over Coe — the third straight victory for the Saint Mary's University volleyball team — the Cardinals entered the second day of the Augustana Viking Classic clicking on all cylinders.
Â
Unfortunately, Wartburg decided to throw a monkey wrench into the Cardinals' well-oiled machine, as the Knights put an end to Saint Mary's winning ways with a 3-0 victory Saturday morning.
Â
The Cardinals did not waste any time getting back on the winning track, however, as Saint Mary's rebounded from that 3-0 loss with a win of their own — beating host Augustana 3-1 in its final match of the weekend.
Â
Wartburg outlasted Saint Mary's 25-22 in the opening set of their match, before adding a convincing 25-16 in the second set and holding off a late Cardinal rally for a 26-24 in Set 3.
Â
Linnaea Wallis (Dresser, Wis.) delivered a team-high 12 kills and hit .270 against Wartburg, while
Lillian Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) — coming off a 53-assist effort against Coe on Friday — dished out 31 helpers vs. the Knights and
DeJaye Baab (Wabasha, Minn.) chipped in 18 digs.
Â
For the second straight match, the Cardinals dropped the first set against Augustana, falling 25-23. From there, Saint Mary's turned up the heat, pulling even with a 26-24 win in Set 2. The Cardinals outlasted the Vikings 31-29 in their longest set of the season and closed out the wini with a commanding 25-14 win in the fourth set.
Â
Daynalyn Jostock (Millville, Minn.) hammered out a career-high 18 kills, while Wallis recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 14 kills and a career-best 20 digs.
Elise Amerongen (Woodbury, Minn.) chipped in 10 kills, with Braun dishing out 37 assists and Baab leading four Cardinals in double figures with 24 digs. Along with Baab's 24 digs and Wallis' 20,
Hayley Weber (Gladbrook, Iowa) added 13 and
Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) finished with 12.
Â
The Cardinals (11-7 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, entertaining St. Thomas in a 7 p.m. matchup at the Saint Mary's Gym.
